President Joe Biden formally announced on Tuesday morning that he will be seeking a second term as President of the United States despite the vast majority of Americans believing that he should not run again.
“Every generation has a moment where they have had to stand up for democracy. To stand up for their fundamental freedoms. I believe this is ours,” Biden wrote.
“That’s why I’m running for reelection as President of the United States. Join us. Let’s finish the job.”
At 80 years old, Biden is already the oldest president in American history and would be 86 by the end of a potential second term in the White House.
Just this week, a poll conducted by NBC News found that 70 per cent of Americans, including 51 per cent of Democrats, believe that Biden should step aside and not run for another term in office, with nearly half of those surveyed who opposed his re-election citing the president’s age as a major concern.

WHAT DEMOCRATS ARE SAYING:
Bernie Sanders
Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont said Tuesday that he would forgo another presidential bid of his own and instead endorse President Joe Biden’s reelection.
The leading progressive, who was Biden’s chief rival in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, told The Associated Press that he would “do everything I can to see the president is reelected.”
“The last thing this country needs is a Donald Trump or some other right-wing demagogue who is going to try to undermine American democracy or take away a woman’s right to choose, or not address the crisis of gun violence, or racism, sexism or homophobia,” Sanders said in an interview. “So, I’m in to do what I can to make sure that the president is reelected.”
Barack Obama
Former President Obama boosted President Biden’s reelection bid on Tuesday, saying “let’s get to work” to reelect Biden.
“Proud of all that Joe Biden and his administration have accomplished these last few years. He’s delivered for the American people — and he’ll continue to do so once he’s re-elected. Let’s get to work!” Obama said, retweeting Biden’s video announcement and including a link to Biden’s campaign website.
Gavin Newsom
California Governor Gavin Newsom officially endorsed President Joe Biden’s reelection bid on Tuesday. And an individual close to Newsom told TheWrap the governor is shelving his own presidential ambitions for a 2024 run as a result.
