House GOP Threaten to Sink Trump Megabill

2 min read

President Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” is already facing pushback from Republicans in the House—just hours after Vice President JD Vance cast the tie-breaking vote to pass it in the Senate, WSJ reported.

Enough Republicans have said they’ll vote “no” to block the bill in the House, unless Trump and GOP leaders can flip some holdouts at the last minute. Since the vote will be close, only three House Republicans joining Democrats would be enough to stop it.

Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC), a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, said right after the Senate vote that he would not support sending the bill forward in the House Rules Committee. He also said he would vote against it on the House floor.

“Our bill has been completely changed—from the IRA credits to the deficit,” Norman said, referring to Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act.

“This bill’s a nonstarter. We want to do this, but this bill doesn’t do what the president wants it to do.”

Norman believes there are enough Republicans ready to vote “no” to sink the bill. If Speaker Mike Johnson can’t get the votes, the House and Senate will need to negotiate a new version—something that could delay the process past Trump’s July 4 deadline.

Complaints from both conservatives and moderates had already been growing even before the Senate passed the bill, after a 27-hour amendment process.

The bill includes Trump’s top priorities: extending his 2017 tax cuts, removing taxes on tips and overtime, and boosting funding for immigration and border enforcement.

Now, the House GOP is frustrated with changes made in the Senate to the version they had barely passed weeks earlier. Some Republicans feel the bill got worse, even though they were promised it would be improved.

Still, Trump and Speaker Johnson have convinced reluctant Republicans before—so the bill isn’t dead yet.
