Former President Trump said Tuesday he’s reached an agreement with Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign over terms of the Sept. 10 presidential debate.
The two campaigns had been at odds over whether the microphones should be hot for the debate on ABC News.
Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform that they’ve agreed to the same rules as that of the June CNN debate with President Biden, in which the microphones were muted when the candidates were not speaking.
The Harris campaign said in an emailed statement: “Both candidates have publicly made clear their willingness to debate with unmuted mics for the duration of the debate to fully allow for substantive exchanges between the candidates – but it appears Donald Trump is letting his handlers overrule him. Sad!”
Candidates can’t bring notes and will not be given the questions in advance, Trump said.
Harris, who became the presidential nominee last month after Biden dropped out, believes “both candidates’ mics should be live throughout the full broadcast,” Brian Fallon, the Harris campaign’s senior advisor for communications, said Monday.
Currently, the ABC debate is the only matchup the two campaigns have agreed to. Trump said that Harris did not agree to a proposed Fox News debate next week or a potential NBC debate following the ABC contest.
